hey,
i installed mplayer, made sure to --enable-gui during the config and have my default skin in the .mplayer/Skin directory but when i play a file, it just comes up with the video and sound, but no panel to stop, rewind, etc.
any ideas?

You need to pass mplayer the -gui switch to start the GUI. You can also just use gmplayer. For example, I start mplayer with
gmplayer -ao oss -vo x11 &
or, equivalently
mplayer -gui -ao oss -vo x11 &

mplayer is great. i can now play .wmv files which was trhe main reason i needed it.
if i put the the skin of my choice in the .mplayer/Skin folder i cant see it when i switch to it.
if i start mplayer and i see the default skin, i go to skin browser, i see the title of my skin, i select it, but nothing happens.
why is that?

Well, that's kind of odd. Did you check the permissions and ownership on the directory and files after you untarred the archive? Did you try more than one skin? If it's not the permissions or the skin, then I have no idea. There any configuration necessary to switch skins, at least not that I'm aware of. It should work right out of the box.
Just out of curiosity, I wonder what it would do if you removed the default skin and left the other one.
