quick chmod/chown question

I know this is bad but I run quake1 in root cause of some messed up permissions on my video card. I need to have root have READ ONLY permissions on a file config.cfg what is the command and what can happen to me if I continue to play as root?

Also anyone know how to adjust glqwcl gamma- the slider doesn't work (nor in the console) is there a gama adjuster in X some where? I use gnome.

chmod 4XX will give root readonly, I don't know what you want in group, world, 444 will put them all in read-only. Playing the game as root is not really the issue, and will not "of itself" cause any problems that I can think of. The issue is that, as root, you are risking a mis-typed command causing havoc. We might better invest some energy into whay the thing won't work as a user, anyway. What do you think?
