I've pretty much been a Solaris guy, but my boss wants me to set up a linux-box that has company support. That limits my choices, but after some research, I figure RedHat and Mandrake are the two I'm looking at. Debian would have been great, but again, there is the support issue. For a development(not production) environment, which would you guys choose? Mandrake or Redhat. Security and stability are the keys here. Thanks all, and have a safe Halloween.

PS I keep hearing that Mandrake does not offer the customizability that advanced users would want. I'm not really sure that this is true . . . I'd like to confirm this. Thanks again.

redhat. but follow the updates and stuff on their page. it's buggy at first. but mandrake feels really unprofessional to me personally...

Either, since Mandrake is a updated and optimised Redhat. But, I would pick Slackware ... I mean Redhat 6.2. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

They can both be customised/tweaked as far as you want to go. As for security -ditto -it's up to you how far you want to take it.
Security "out of the box" will depend on what and how you choose to install - this goes for any distro really -you can always tighten it later/whenever you want.

Yeah, when I used Mandrake 7.1, it seemed a little messy to as far as being able to configure it by hand. If you're looking for the company support Red Hat would probably be the best, but I think your overall best bet would be Slackware. I've only been using it for a couple of weeks now but like it much more than Mandrake.
