Hi
I'm downloading Slack for my sister-in-laws ancient PC as I've been told it would suit a machine running only 16MB RAM
I'm a little confused as to what to dload, at the moment I'm getting install.iso but there is also source.iso and extra.iso I reckon I'm on the right track but please confirm.
Secondly, I don't understand IDE or SCSI drives, it's a very old machine, what's she likely to have?
What boot disk would be best?
Many thanks

Install.iso would be needed for the install and most of the standard software. Extra.iso would be the optional packages and sources is the source code for changing and compiling the included software.
Most wouldn't bother to get the sources.

Thanks
what about the boot disk, is a very old machine likely to have a IDE or SCSI drive?
Thanks

More than likely you've got IDE drives. Try bare for boot and color for root.

Great! I'd got as far as guessing bare would be the one but do I need a root disk if I have the install CD (made from 'install.iso')
Many thanks

Will that machine boot off CD? That would simplify the whole thing. If not, I think you must have a root disk. Email me if you run into trouble.

I take it that you intend to run X? You need to use one of the light window managers such as Blackbox. KDE or Gnome would be torture...

If you've got the CD, you don't actually need to create the boot/root disks. Just pop the CD in and it'll use the default, which I believe is color and bare. The boot/root disks are for those who's machines require special attention.
