You shouldn't have done it, but now that it is done:

Ofcourse with MandrakeUpdate working from the cooker, you get most of the benefits of aptget with the beauty of RPM. Plus Mandrake also includes urpmi. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Fuzzy is tempted by the latest mandrake but, in the end, will never part with debian.
It just won't happen. Debian courses through my veins.
So... my vote is for Debian! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've been using mandrake for awhile, but I've got debian CDs comming in the mail so I'll see how debian is tomorrow.

I've gotten tired of how much Mandrake won't let me do, so I'm switching...or trying to that is =)

I changed from Mandrake to Debian, and I'm just loving it. Apt-get is amazing.

I started out with Corel, then just went with Debian after a while. I've played with Mandrake on a friend's machine and I don't like it. The RPM system is all messed up, making it hard to install new software. You can't just use the normal Red Hat RPMs, you need to use special RPMs with mdk in their names. /etc is all messed up, as well as the init.d scripts and I couldn't figure out heads or tails out of them. Personally, after playing with it, even Corel Linux is better than that in my mind. I say forget Mandrake and go with either Debian or An-Easier-Debian-Than-Debian Corel Linux. Notice that Corel also modifies some things making it a little hard to figure out where some things are if you're a veteran user, but they don't change too much.

Debian. The time you save using apt-get instead of running after obsucre dependencies, you can put it to learn other things, like getting your Voodoo3 working, configuring sound the way it should be configured, learning emacs or vi, etc. I used Mandrake for about 4-5 months when I started with Linux. Switching to Debian was like sleeping with your not-so-good-looking girlfriend to sleeping with Jenna Jameson http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I gotta disagree with the majority here. Debian is harder to setup and appt-get is great but not for those of us with modems.

Drake takes all the hassle of 90& of all configuration saving you a lot of time and its very stable to boot (literally).

When Drake can implement an appt-get clone then there really will not be any competition.

true i agree with you luke, i love the ease of installation and how easy it is to configure mandrake and apt-get is a definate need for me (im on cable anyways (for the person saying he has dialup)). wish they would get on it and make something like apt-get for drake.

I have just made the switch from Mandrake to Debian. I had all good intentions of making everything that I compiled/unpacked known to the package management system. That's gone out of the window already... I've come to the conclusion that packages are dead handy, but maybe full blown package management is not for me.
All I can say is that it is no bad thing to try different distros, I hope to try a few more myself. (and now I have my Debian cd set including all the sources, my next project will be to build a LFS - I've set aside a partition for the job http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif )

If you're looking for relative ease (read: GUI) in setup and configuration, but want the sweetness of apt-get (I use it just fine with a dialup connection), try something like Storm Linux. It's a much better option than Corel. One reason is that Corel has a nasty habit of not recognizing any number of video cards when it starts its installation and there is no text-based install. So if it doesn't "know" your vid card, it hangs and you're screwed. (They have made no mention of changing that.)
Storm is a solid debian-based distro. It has a gui-fied version of apt-get but, honestly, you're better off on the command line. And the Storm Administration Tool is a gui-drakconf-like thing that makes a lot of configuring relatively easy.
(For those Mandrake users, I agree it is a nice starter version but I tried installing it last night on a "new" computer I got a hold of, all of the hardware is supported, but Mandrake coughed and belched. Couldn't find my floppy, nic, even the proper mouse or vid card. That's the only distro that wouldn't install cleanly on it. (Red Hat 6.2 had some problems, too.) But Debian, Storm, Slack have all worked fine "out of the box".
Don't ask me why the problems... I don't know.
But for those who think debian is too tough, either a) actually try installing it for yourself -- don't go by what others say and b) try Storm or Libranet -- very nice alternatives.

Mandrake 7.2 - Already comes with KDE 2.0, usb support, and compiled for i586 + .. I use it on my PIII 733 for desktop needs, and my router I run debian on (P166). End result: DRAKE!

Drake is the best right now. It is the most up-to-date and the easist to install. Comes with a **** load of software. People dislike it because it works so well. If you want to have fun go get a old version of linux and install that then get all the kernal versions and patches and then install all the new libs and bins and then when all that is done go to freshmeat and load all the additional software that you want. When all that is done you end up with a linux distro that looks alot like drake. Man they are all the same, find one that meets your needs and makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.
