Kernel 2.4 is going gold in December, and I'm thinking of trying it out now. I was just wondering:

1) How good is 2.4 anyway?
2) How would you rate the difficulty of compiling and installing the kernel?
3) Would I be able to patch the kernel to the released version once it goes gold?

Thanks in advance.

I have done several of the 2.4.kernels. You won't see anything different unless you need and use some of it's new features. On my hardware, all of them have been totally stable. I wanted to use LVM, so 2.4 series kernels was the way to go. They compile issue free here. After about -test5 or 6 you must insure that you have the newest modutils package, as the layout of the modules directories has changed. Remember that the 2.4 series will be just like all the others, there will be a release often, but the issues addressed affect a tiny group of users, in general. I do not see any performance increase here, subjectively, I have made no attempt at benchmarking. LVM was what I wanted, and it's in daily use, slick as a button. Jump in, the waters fine.

I got better FPS because of DRI being in the kernel space. I also got my USB stuff to work in 2.4. The actual kernel load time was faster, but that might just be because it was optimized for my computer. Overall I think it was a smidgeon faster. The big thing is going to be more hardware support (hence it only being 2.4 and not a big jump like 3.0). If you run SMP, 2.4 will be the way to go of course. For most desktops though, it will be like me- USB and DRI for Graphics.
