OS: Mandrake 8.2

Here I am on the internet finally...whew! Now I'm trying to figure out what software to use. Right now, it's Netscape for the web. The fonts are HUGE even though I've tried to change the size from the toolbar. The only thing that got smaller is this box I'm typing into. I can barely see it.

The rest of the print on this page is so big you could read it from outside.

I'm partial to Opera but am having trouble with it. I've downloaded it twice (a binary file) and it won't unzip without telling me there are errors in all modules. Could be I need an ftp client for binary files. Maybe they're being downloaded and converted to ascii??

Next: What's the deal with acrobat reader? Downloaded and installed just fine. Won't come up. The executable is not in /usr/bin but buried somewhere else.

Anyone have any ideas?

L

P.S. Hope you can read this because I can't.

Hey, welcome to Linux.
If you can get to it 'alt.os.linux.mandrake' is good. Their FAQ is good. Linuxnewbie is good. http://www.linuxdoc.org/ is good.
Are you using a downloaded ISO? All boxed sets I have bought install Acrobat Reader fine.
The font deal is a lot harder than it should be. Sorry I do not have a link for you.
Good Luck.

I used wget (frontend for ftp) for d/l until I got Opera. I still fetch from ftp sites rather than http. Type "man wget" for details. It's not gui but for simple downloads all you need is
wget -c ftp://<path/to/file>
The -c switch allows it to resume interrupted transfers.

As for Acrobat reader, type "which acroread" to find the executable. The plugin has been a pretty ragged trip for me to so in Opera I often just save the file then:
acroread <path/to/file.pdf>

I don't remember if I ever got very good fonts onto Netscape or not.

I prefer opera but I also have mozilla and galeon installed which are very useable. Mozilla's getting better all the time and Galeon's been nice for quite a while :D

Whoaw. I always get too small of
fonts in netscape, so I don't know what to tell you. I download opera with either
ns or opera and it turns out fine.
I get the static builds. I use mozilla
sometimes, but it's kinda slow on this
comp. Galeon won't wurk cause someone linked it against libstdc++3.

With regards to the Acrobat Reader plug-in. This is one way to approach it: the plug-ins are all named *.so, so do a search in *.so

In my installation, the plug-ins are located in /opt/netscape/plugins. You can also find this by going into Netscape, Help, About plug-ins.

The plug-in for Acrobat Reader is nppdf.so, as far as I know, so try copying that to the plugins directory.

With regards to fonts, do a forum search on this website for anti-aliased fonts...OR try downloading the stable Mozilla RPM. I downloaded 0.9.8 and have found it to be very stable, has better and faster rendering than Netscape, and some useful options and font support. Don't download the 'mail' and 'pcm (i.e. internet banking)' options if you don't want them. www.mozilla.org (http://www.mozilla.org)

For slower P.C.'s, you can download browseX (www.browseX.com)
