I use fdisk to remove the partitions with linux on the swap and ext2 and turn it back into free space thats unallocated. Will LILO be removed? I think it might have been put in the MBR.

Mikenell dvdnut 11-18-2000, 02:06 PM afaik, lilo is stored on the mbr, or the first part of the linux partition. if you are former then lilo will still be there until you format mbr. in the latter case, when you removed the partitions then you said goodbye to lilo too. hth Mikenell 11-18-2000, 02:21 PM Anyway to find out how its setup? Mikenell RageAHolic 11-18-2000, 03:23 PM If you haven't blown anything away yet...you can look in your /etc/lilo.conf file. The first line or two should show where LILO is. If it says /dev/hda = MBR If it says /dev/hdax = root partition ------------------ ...your friendly neighborhood RageAHolic (http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/RageAHolic/index.html) Rage fueled by: AMD Athlon Mikenell 11-18-2000, 03:26 PM Thanks. I'll check, btw, is there anyway to view/edit whats in the MBR? I cant format the MBR because I have windows on the drive too. If its in the MBR how can I get rid of it? Thanks Mikenell drstrangelove 11-18-2000, 03:36 PM If lilo is in the MBR, you can use a windows boot disk and at the command prompt type fdisk /mbr to erase the MBR... hope this helps Dr. Strangelove ------------------ Never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line!! Hahahahahahaha*** Mikenell 11-18-2000, 03:59 PM I've done that before and my computer wouldnt boot at all. Mikenell RageAHolic 11-18-2000, 04:42 PM From Linux, you can uninstall LILO by issuing the following command (I'd refer to the LILO manpage first): /sbin/lilo -u (or maybe U...man lilo) It's wierd that after the fdisk /mbr you couldn't boot. fdisk /mbr from a DOS/Windows bootdisk is supposed to return the MBR to its original state (i.e-pre-linux). Bad bootdisk maybe? ------------------ ...your friendly neighborhood RageAHolic (http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/RageAHolic/index.html) Rage fueled by: AMD Athlon [This message has been edited by RageAHolic (edited 18 November 2000).] Mikenell 11-18-2000, 05:12 PM It is? Hmm weird, oh well, its in the MBR, I got rid of the slackware partitions and I can live with the lilo prompt until I install another Distro (Debian) which will replace it right?
