i just installed mandrake 6.0 and can do absolutely nothing with it. (not nothing, but i hardly have a clue. i can browse directories, make users, send mail, and edit text files). i tried to install the K entironment but i guess i missed some packages i needed (the ascii install program was rediculously vague and difficult. i had no idea what any of those 18000 packages were all about, and im working on a very limited hard drive). so i took a hack at linuxconf. i set the majority of the network settings to the best of my ability - i actually think i did quite well there as ive had some experience with windows networks. the NIC is a PCI card, model SMC 9432TX. my installation manual made it sound like PCI NICs were automatically detected and modules were loaded for them. is that so? how can i tell if the system knows this thing is in there?
essentially, all im shooting for now is a client to client LAN at my house with this thing. if i can get that far, and get apache, terminal programs, and ftp working on this thing then ill go for the proxy i had in mind, which is really why i undertook this project.
the final product will (hopefully) be a web server/router/dedicated quake2 server in my dorm room ..and i move back to school next monday =)
anyways..if someone can help me get the first NIC in this pig i should be in better shape and at least have a chance. oh, and someone write mandrake and tell them that their ascii installer SUCKS.
