I just installed Mandrake 7.1 the other day and I'm stumped on how to set up my University ethernet account. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

i'm not in front of my linux box, but I believ if you go into the drak config program and select the linuxconfig program, there will be a button regarding network stuff. From there you can enter you IP, DNS, Gateway, etc. I think that you'll have to restart after you do that?

I'll give that a try, but I don't think it's recognizing my ISA Intel EtherExpress PRO NIC. I load up harddrak, click "detect ISA devices", and then there's no "+" in front of the NIC for me to expand on the hardware tree.
What to do?

Most college networks use dhcp. You could try opening a terminal under root, and tying netconf. Click on Basic Host Info. There should be a tab called adaptor one. Click on it and make sure it is inabled. Also click on dhcp. If they gave you an ip address, don't click dhcp, instead put in in here.

Save yourself a world of hurt and go buy a PCI ethernet card. If you have enough cash, get 3com or lynksys.

I agree. ISA sucks, even in Windows. A Linksys is as little as $14...how much is your time worth?

I have had more trouble with linksys than I have had with windows. DON'T get a linksys. If you want a cheap, effective card, get a dlink. They cost around fifteen-twnety bucks. But linksys can't handle having anything share it's irq (especially in compaqs, dells, and hps, for whatever reason) anc can cause the machine to reboot. In linux, it just freezes up. Linksys SUCKS. Get a D-Link or maybe a Netgear (if you're broke). Don't settle for a ****ty card like that.

I have a linksys, dlink, netgear and kingston cards, which I have used in my Drake 7.1 system, all auto-detected and working perfect. These cards were in the machine 2 at a time (I was running nat) in about every combination, didin't have any irq problems

i'd have to agree with the ISA sucks comments. Check the mandrake hardware pages to be sure that you buy a NIC that is going to work with the system. I had a world of trouble with my ****ty ISA card and finally got a 3com and have had clear sailing since.

I have a very old d-link 220 isa (ne2000 compatible) and, while not autodetected, worked fine after using modprobe ne io=0x300 irq=10 (your settings are probably different). I updated my modules and then it worked like a charm. Took about 30 minutes to figure it out.
Then again, I run debian... not mandrake. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I spy with my little eye something that begins with "W"... oops, it's gone now.

Like my man WITMAN said "get yourself a new NIC", and please, please, please dont get linsys, they claim it's linux compatible, but it never worked for me, i tought the problem was something else until i found an old 3com card laying around in the office and tried it, and my problem was solved

I'm having a similar problem but with a 3com 3c905c network card. There is no little plus in hard drake. I tried downloading the driver from 3com but it doesn't work. I tried installing it automatically, that didn't work. I then tried to compile it myself and that didn't work either. Please help..

Guys:
ISA PnP cards MUST be configured for the IRQ and Base I/O in DOS.
Download the config utility from the manufacturer, then unzip it in windows if its zipped. Copy it to a bootable DOS floppy, then configure the card.
After that it's a piece of cake (privided the card is supported.)

Configure the card? I thought it already was configured. I don't know for sure but I don't think 3com has a config utility...I could be completely wrong though

Sorry, I'm a moron.. found the config utility, it's in windows. What configuration settings do I need to set up?
