To ask a stupid question!
I have installed StarOffice on my RH7.3 as root.
Now I want to use it as a user with my uid that has been created. But...when I log in under my uid the product is not there. How do I grant / setup the menu to acces this under any uid. I don't want to run it as root user.
Dumb question I know but .....
Thanks
It's got something to do with either creating a link to the original app file (in each user directory you want to use it); or actually copying the original app file to the user directory(s).
Have you seen this NHF on the subject?...
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/software/staroffice.html
Hope that helps.

You need to first install as root with the network install option and then run ./setup for each individual user.

If its like OO then you run the binary with the /net option then cd to the usr/local/share/StarOffice or /usr/share/StarOffice or something like that and run ./setup as the user.

The way I see it, surely it is like win in the sense that you can install the application (any app for that matter) into say /OPT then grant usr rights by modifying the bash or something like that? I cannot see where you can grant usr rights to use an app such as you can in win. (I assume you follow me here).
Maybe anding env variables in the usr bash ???

Well I installed it with /net as root and so it installed.
I then login as usr and hit the icon in the menu and it installed. what I am not happy about in this soln is:
Why use up my drive with all these installations - one per use - whathappened to the shared aspect of software apps?
Also, when I install it does not find the java j2re yet if I open an Xterm and type in java it works fine, Huh? Any help here?
PS it is StarOffice 5.2 on RH7.3
Thanks.

It doesnt do a full install in the user directory, unless you choose to do so. I think there is a network option or local option during the user install.
