i386 refers to 80386, 80486 processors, and should work with pretty much any processor.

i586 refers to pentium class computers, and should work with anything equivalent.

i686 refers to a pentium II or better processor.

As far as which one to choose? I'd try i686. If it doesn't work (it should), then try i586.

x86 architecture.

i386/i486 make sense. i586 are Pentiums, i686 are ppro/p2, etc. The AMD k5 is a 586 clone, and the k6- and up is 686 (as far as I know... please someone correct me if not). No idea as to how the winchip/cyrix,etc. fit in there...

The differences are the base instruction sets that each processor family has available. Everything in the older ones are present in the knewer ones, which is why some software is " i386 compatable " - it requires the common instruction set of every processor since the intel 386, so anything 386 or higher will run it.
