I have an old copy of Storm Linux 2000 (came with mag) that I never could get to install. But, last night I did get it installed. However, I have a couple of questions...
I went thru pppconig and setup my internet connection fine. But when I "pon <ISP>" it tells me that the kernel is not configured for ppp... ? (I'm probably missing something here, remember I run MDK 7.2 and RH 7)
Can (should) I apt-get the newer version of Debian and Stormix to update this ? (Yeah, it's pretty old) Or, is dpkg a better choice ?
Is this step to Stormix a good one ? I understand it's a little harder than the other distros I have tried. What do you think ?
Is Stormix have the same power and features of Debian or no ? Should I just get Debian instead, how hard is it ?
Sorry for the long post and THANK YOU for all your help. (This forum has been quite a lifesaver...) http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
First... congats on the install.
I have never had to set up a modem connection, so I can't help you there.
Yes you can apt-get dist-upgrade to either potato or woody. I would suggest upgrading to potato first. There are a few packages that will complain but this is not insurmountable.
Storm is Debian with an easier install and some extra GUI tools. It has everything that
Debian has.

I downloaded Stormix fromt the website, burnt it to a disk and installed. Everything went smooth and I was online without a hiccup. Im very impressed with it so far. I just need to get a handle on this apt-get thing.
I'm not sure how to add sources to my sources.list
Tried adding "Craig's sources list" to my /etc/apt/sources.list file but when I run apt-get update I get an error saying "Malformed line 1 in sources list". Huh? don't know what to do about that so.....
Don't have any Deb' books either.
Do you want to upgrade or play around with apt first?

I am not entirely sure but when i setup Debian on a box usually there is a "Install Operating System Kernel and Modules" at this point you should have chosen a PPP module and the ppp-deflate. Odds are you probabaly don't have this installed in the kernel or available as modules. You will need to make a module for this or rebuild your kernel and have it support ppp. That is probably your problem. I assume Storm has something similar because that is how the Debian 2.2 works. I think that is your problem and since you already have the pppconfig done if you do that Storm should be quite usable.
I think that is your problem, so when you correct that problem it should work.

Rod:
I want to get ppp working first, then apt-get an updated Storm to work with. (In essence, to see if it works, learn and then maybe play around a little)
I have MDK working on another HD, but I really can't LEARN much from it... Hey, I could try the 2.4 kernel !?!! I've haven't attempted recompiling the kernel yet...
Looks like I may have to do it for Storm, probably try it first... Any tips for the kernel newbie ??

Debian has a tool called kernel-package that is helpful in kerenl compiling. It may be on your Storm CD. This link is for more information. Pay attention to paragragh 9.2.
