I'm wondering if anyone has had sucess in downloading the install iso? I'm running a 1.5m/s ADSL(normally around 1100k/s) and I'm getting about 900 bytes/second!! And that's the servers that I can connect to. I'm now on a T1 line and work and can't find site on their list of mirrors that I can connect to? Are there any alternate download sites like CNET or something?? At this rate I'm going to be drawing social security by the time the ISO comes down!

You waited too long - servers are slammed. Give it about a week or so, it will most likely slow down a bit. I downloaded it Saturday night and got 275kilobytes a second - finished the entire DL in 40 minutes.

This may sound stupid, but I have only used linux for a couple of months, but what exaclty is an ISO? I have heard several mentions of it, but cant seem to figure out exactly what it does for ya...

ISO's aren't a linux specific thing. They are cdrom images, meaning an iso is one big file that shows exactly what belongs on a cd. So, to get 7.2 from an iso you download the iso and then any decent cd burning program can write that to a cd that will be the same as the 7.2 cd you would buy in a store or from cheapbytes.

i downloaded the iso's the day they were on the front page of linuxnewbie.org's webpage... i have them both still sitting on my windows desktop...
i'm on cable, which can get up to 500k/sec average... and it took me about 12 hours to download, at what i think was like 30 KB/sec... it sucked... but it was definately worth it

I got the whole thing too. If you downloaded it when LNO posted the news then you should've been fine.
Actually the Mandrake CEO requested that I change the link we originally published because sunsite was getting hammered.
LNO basically broke the news taht Mandrake was kinda pushed into releasing the news early because I got official word that it was supposed to be released Nov. 3rd.

If you really want it bad just go to your local Wal-Mart I just bought Mandrake 7.2 at Wal-Mart this afternoon. The lady at the counter said that the boxes arrived last night. This was Iowa Falls, Ia. So if you are even further out in the boonies than I am you may have to wait till tomorrow.

I downloaded it on Saturday night. It worked like a charm and the download took less than an hour. It seems now that all of the servers are slammed. Give me a couple of hours to set it up and I'll allow limited FTP access from my box and you can try to download it from me.

Paranoia is just a heightened state of awareness...
I got it from a French server on Sat. Night.
Took me six hours at 25k/s. I have it running and don't really notice much difference from rc1 except KDE2 seems a little faster. I am going to need to reinstall as I forgot to format my /var partion and my rpm data is all screwed up with it thinking I have the wrong versions installed. Plus I am finding it didn't install some stuff. Kind of exciting in a wierd MS sort of way. I have to remember to copy /var/tmp before I format it though. I keep all my 'works in progress' there.

Don't but it from Wal-Mart!
I read on /. that the Wal-Mart distro of Mandrake 7.2 is actually a 7.1 beta!
Wal-Mart got it and packaged it as 7.2
I ordered mine from cheapbytes.com in CD-R format today.I really dont see myself downloading a whole distro on my 26.4k connection..lol.
I thought 7.2 wasnt supposed to hit the store shelves for another couple of weeks?

I just managed to get both the 72 inst image as well as the extras image in a little under 3 hours. (pulled them from a server in Ireland.)
Now if I can come up with another blank CD I can walk out of work tonight a happy man.

You got it wrong. The Wal-Mart ones are not 7.1 beta. They are 7.2 with the Release Candidate of KDE 2.0. They shipped about 20,000 of these before KDE 2.0 FINAL was released. Only Wal-Mart and a few other stores have the Release Candidate. I think the CEO of Mandrake said they may offer to mail CD's with KDE 2.0 to people who buy these. There is a news story somewhere about this.

Linux Mandrake IMO sucks. It's bloated and I have had better luck with Win 98SE. Don't believe the hype.

I'd have to disagree with you pal... I've recently switched from win98 to mandrake and have found it to be much better in the realm of performance and stability. I like the fact that I have some control over certain parts of the OS. I can say that the learning curve is greater for linux, but personally I rather struggle initially to understand a better OS than be spoonfed whatever microsoft wants to give you.

I will agree that Mandrake is better than Win98. I haven't been using it long, a couple months, but after a week of setting up Linux I have yet to have it crash. Granted, I had to find some information to set up my GeForce2 card, and the Live! card, but it was actually fun learning it. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I would be willing to do it all over again. Oops, I just bought a faster hard drive, so I will be reinstalling everything again. With both systems you have to update to gain functionality, but with Linux, I see it getting stabler.(I know, not a real word) When was the last time M$ came out with a successor to their operating system that was more stable out of the box than the previous version? You can't get pissed off with someone being ignorant from the start, but you can be very irrate with the people who choose to remain ignorant.

I started downloading the iso's the first I heard they were out. In the past I'll try to connect at night.( not sure which time-zone their servers are in) Once I'm able to login with gFTP it will take about 7 hours. I've got a 384 adsl connection and it's pretty quick. Due to popularity of mandrake it's getting harder and harder to get into the servers when it first comes out. I've been downloading these iso's since 6.1 and it gets harder and harder with every release. Good Luck!

I just reinstalled drake 7.0 on a spare partition on my hard drive (the rest is dedicated to debian http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif ). I like it enough. It may be a bit old but it works pretty well! If only it had apt-get...
Setting up my network was a snap, though. A few more strings to pull to do it in debian but, overall, I still like debian way more than the others... especially wind-blows. My wife still uses win95 because 98 sucked. I hear the recent Migraine Edition is even rockier. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/eek.gif
I'll stick with my debian. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

dude. that mandrake7.2 install was so friggin easy. I could do it blind folded. like. seroiusly. that was insane.
I can't believe it. Mandrake is doing wonders with ease-of-use stuff.
but it's a little too cute for me.

Yes, twice! (Once in 6 hours, once in 3 hours!) Neither attempts made a bootable cd even though they were from the install iso's! This did not happen to me with the 7.2 beta. Has anyone had a similar experience?

I just picked mine up from Linuxiso.org. Took me a few attempts, but I think I finally got a good set. (At least the file sizes match now.)

Took 3 hours, each CD, starting at 8:00 PM, MST, and I got them from one of the German servers.

My first attempt let me download at a whopping 1K/sec (the night it was released) but I tried 2 nights later and got lucky, I found a server that let me download each ISO in about 25-30 minutes. It *is* possible, I think you have to just hit the right server at the right time.

I guess the hype has died off now. I'm getting it from mirror.ac.uk at 110kb/sec (I know I've had 500+ before), not sure whether to carry on as it'll nearly take a couple of hours to download, still, I wanna give it a go on a new VMWare partition...

I used the tree instead of the ISO. I started when that earlybird link got posted a while back. Now I want to install on a computer with a small harddrive and the I need the ISO instead of the tree. DOH!
