Ok, I've looked around the internet and can't really find any clarification on these so I'm gonna bug the experts here.

Desktop Managers are like Gnome, KDE, etc, correct?

Window managers are Enlightenment, Sawfish, etc, correct?

Ok, well.. I've seen a lot of people talking about how they don't use DM's with their setup, just WM's. I thought that was a great idea because I really don't like KDE or Gnome. I was thinking I could reinstall without Gnome and KDE and it will be a basic Xfree that I could load enlightenment up in and be good to go. Err.. Ok, so I thought.. After the install finished Xfree loaded up, I logged in, and it just took me to a console. This is how it's supposed to work? As you can tell I'm still new, and ended up having to reinstall Gnome/KDE to get around. hehe. When you install it like that, how do you get on the internet and view websites if all you have is a console terminal avail?

This one is mostly directed towards those that use E. I installed E on my Gnome DM and the backgrounds kept switching between the one that came with E and the one Gnome was using. Sometimes the Gnome taskbar and icons would "bleed" through and show up on the background too.. What am I doing wrong here? Is the best way to have a clean desktop not install Gnome or KDE and just run enlightenment or another Window Manager? What are the draw backs of running like that as a Linux Newbie?

Thanks,

Nerro

BTW, if it matters I'm running RedHat 7.1

Create/edit the .xinitrc file in your home directory so that it has the line

exec enlightenment

This will start enlightenment by itself when you do startx. For other window managers, change englightenment to what you want, i.e.

exec blackbox or
exec gnome-session or
exec wmaker
etc...

Have fun
