I would like to setup a wiredless network. I have Redhat 7.2 and a Windows ME to put on this network. I would like it so both computers can connect to the internet with non of them being a host so one has to connect to the other one

Windows Me--

-- Wireless router--dsl modem

Redhat 7.2--

I would like to avoid a wired network (My mom doesn't like those wires for computers :))

I don't see a problem with this regarding the setup, there are quite a few wireless lan cards that support Linux. However, unless you are going to use a VPN w/ipsec or PPTP, you are gonna be running on one leaky ship there :). We had a discussion about this at the last ELUG meeting. It is way to easy to simply connect to people's access points, grab an IP and surf :D And no, WEP does not offer decent protection. Listen in for a bit to get some keys, then crack the code in about 30 seconds or less. So if you're gonna set this up, invest a LOT of time in securing this thing.

Here is a link that might help you set something like that up: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/wireless/2001/03/06/recipe.html

So what your saying is that I can get like a Cisco wireless network package and able to connect the two so they can share the dsl line and talk to each one with shamba? If this is true, this makes it easier to get it up and running.

P.S. I am not worried about the wireless network being unsecure becuase both machince have at least two firewalls and the Redhat one is basically secure for basic to intermedate attacks. Working on advance securitu for it.

Why not just set up a static network and not use dhcp at all?

I made a cantenna out of a Foldgers coffee can last week - more than doubled the range of a laptop with regular antenna/card and a desktop with one of the cisco pci cards.

And yes, you really really do need to worry about security... Easy way would be to put a box on the dsl line running Linux, and just use dumb X terminals around the house. A low end pentium with 8mb ram makes a fine id10t box.

So I can use any wiredless network kit. I wasn't planing on using a dhcp network. They will both have shared internet access. I am going to put at least 128 bit ecyption on the network. Plus if any one is trying to get on the network I be able to tell by noticing one a lot of atempts and a car or van that park and no movement is happening.
