OK so I have just got a cable modem, and it plugs into my network card. Great, but now I can't connect to the other PC here at home. The network card has 2 outlets, the simple coax cable goes to the PC and the other one, like a phone socket, goes to the modem. Is this just a matter of settings or will I need another network card? Each PC recognises itself but not each other.
Thankx

coax to the pc and the cat5 to the other pc right?

youll probably need two network cards. one for the cable modem to plug into, and then a second one to either connect your computer to another computer using a crossover cable, or alternatively, using normal cable, connect your computer to a hub etc...

you need to conncect the two pc's with a cat5 crossover cable
you can change a normal cable to a crossover if you need to just search in google.

you'll need another network card.

you can use a crossover cable just fine, but I would suggest getting a hub or even spending a few (okay maybe not a few) extra bucks and get yourself a switch for your internal network. It will allow for expandability (I don't think that's a word, but you get the point). More computers have always made it easier for me to set up various types of servers. Great for networking newbies.

Have fun!!

Thanks Guys. I am not looking at buying any more PC's for a long time so will put in the extra network card I have. I don't know how I ended up with 3 monitors 3 network cards and only 2 PC's.

No, you wouldnt need another NIC card to connect all the other comps. All you would need is a hub or a router ( if your going to have more than 2 comps on 1 cable connection) and some cat 5 cables to reach all the other comps. Or you could have 2 NIC cards in each comp and you could have a token ring type network ( i think thats what its called). If you need any more help just email me at Fr0stByte7@hotmail.com

When you plug one network cable into the card, it turns off the other connector.

Just install another nic. Quick, cheaper, and easier! ;)

Tried to put in the other card, but found out I have no space. it is only a Digital PC 3500, so has 2isa and 2 pci, but because of the way its set up you can only use 3. So I have 1 NIC, 1 sound card and 1 scsi card. Oh well I'll just go buy a hub.

A hub won't help you if you can't install a second nic. If you're going to serve the cable to your network, you must have 2 nic's in the machine that will serve it. The only other way is to use a cable/dsl router and I have no idea how well they work with linux.

You don't need extra nic if you get a Cable/DSL router. I recommend a router because it doesn't take extra resources and it's FAST! It's faster than using cable modem with one PC. I can download multiple files from my other machine and connection on this machine doesn't suffer.

Linksys or Netgear routers are very good for around $100 and they come with 4 ports which means you don't need to get a hub.
