subject basically says my problem.

i'm using a mach64 to power a second monitor and i would really like to get better than 8bp color out of it.

the README.Mach64 file in the docs section of the X install says that the "ati" driver that it uses is capable of 24 bpp and it looks like my specific card can do it, but when i try to use it X doesn't start on that monitor

Just wondering, you do know how to set your color depth to 24bpp? Also, how much RAM do you have? I believe Mach64 could ship as low as 2MB.

yes, i know how to set the color depth. i have my other card set to 24.

from what i've found in different places i've decided that i have a 2mb version of the mach64.

the disturbing thing is that i've seen it do a resonable number of colors in 3.3.x versions of X, but the docs with 4.01 say with 2mb of ram it will only do 8bpp... this doesn't make sense to me.

*grins* ...
In the screen section of the xf86config file
DefaultColorDepth=24bpp
-- DONOT use the ATI setup ...

Leastways that worked for me....
