assuming that i am able to install Lmndrke or RHL. how much do i partition for root, swap and native? with only 720mg hd. i understand that i will probably have a txt base install and forego a brilliantly colored gui? fobot or any others feel free to advise.lol

unless this is going to be a server doing lots of lgging i would (and have) put it all one one parttion. if it is a server i would make one for /var (~75 MB). also, swap needs its own partion, i give my swap spaces between 32 - 64 MB.

i am still too newbie to get fancy with partitions. i am doing a debian install on an old 486 (16mb/420mb) box right now, and i did 12mb /boot, 35mb swap, and the rest in / for everything.

there are some Newbie (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/installation/partition/multi_partition.html) Help (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/filesys/filesysintro.html) Files (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/filesys/directory_nav.html) that cover this pretty well, if you want to get fancy.

if this is that prolinea 486/66, i wouldn't try to load x windows (GUI) at all, just use it from the command line, it might be possible to get some gui going, i don't know for sure.

as far as space goes, all the distro's have options to load only a small amount, much less than 700mb, you just have to choose the custom or expert install choices, and watch them closely to keep the amount of stuff they load down

thz for the relys gang.
a few more quests. at partitioning how do u add root? i kno its sign is / ? how and what do u add for boot.. /boot ? also i tried once to add linux by swapping the 720mb hd into my AMD and out of the (yes fobot) 486/66 prolinea. almongst other problems it didnt competely work but LILO did start after i swapped it back into the 486.i got a error a the end that said fs not found and kernel panic !..anyway i thoroughly agree command line is the only option at this point ie. no gloriously colored xwindow?? all tips or advice welcomed devotees. lol

i hear what ur tellN me pbharris but in my (brief encounters with L installs things dont seem to be so klear or workout. ok if i opted to go with only one partit. then when it comes time to mount, all i'd have to do is place the / sym then format and all other things would take care of themselves??? dont i have to mnt. a few things( manually
type in)like / or /var or /boot or /swap partit. or at least /root? thz for givN my post ur attent. mojo not workN yet - 720mb hd

hello,
one filesystem partition, one swap partition. to make mount mount points just create a new directory at the point you wnat to mount things. its ez!

What a difficult-to-read typing style...no matter...
I myself run Mandrake 7.2. What you need is 1 swap partition (at least equal to the amount of ram you have), one /boot partition (I set mine to 16 megs), and one / partition. DiskDrake (or RH equivalent) will ask you how big you want to make it, and ask for the mount points. Make one of them /boot, one of them /, and make the other one a swap partition. Upon bootup and during the installation, Mandrake or RH will automatically mount all partitions. I have a /boot, a /, a swap, and a /home...truth be told, I've forgotten that they're even there!
