would most external modems work with linux? if so (or even if not), does anybody have any recommendations for an inexpensive modem that is linux-compatible?

Well I'm not sure about any external modem working. I'm sure you could find a USR external serial modem cheap off ebay. Or you could get a pci internal NON win modem for around 60 dollars from www.monarchcomputer.com (http://www.monarchcomputer.com) or mwave.com

All external modems should work with Linux. You'll just have to pick one that suits your needs and price.

I use a 3Com US Robotics 56k serial port Faxmodem which works very well and was reasonably cheap.
