Hola and Salutations!

I have plunged myself into Mandrake 7.0. I am installing on a SONY vaio PCG F270 laptop. I have seen some information about this laptop and the sound card but as I'm new, can make neither head nor tails of what I'm reading.

The Kernel I'm running is 2.2.14-15MDK. I installed using the reccomended settings and did nearly no setup when installing (didn't prompt me for anything) So I may have just missed something.

I notice when I try to run KMP3, I get "Cannot open audio device"

What's the safest. Not neccesarily easiest way to get this baby working? I've seen mention of a "driver" written and posted at http://www.uglx.org/sony.html but he's no longer making the driver available. And I don't really have a broadband internet connection up that I can use to get a new kernel. And wouldn't really feel comfortable doing that quite yet. (but shouldn't 2.2.14 support the card if 2.2.13 does?)

Thanks!

Is the Sony fairly new? If so, then Mandrake 8.0 would have a better chance of supporting the hardware.

I've never used Mandrake although I do know their online documentation is quite good. Try www.linux-mandrake.com (http://www.linux-mandrake.com) and check for the sound configuration docs or faq's.

The laptop's actually about two or three years old. It's a P333 with upgraded RAM Ro 192mb. From what I'm seeing while just playing around in KDE, it seems to run pretty well.

I have a friend with Mandrake 8.0 and I may just try putting that on since I really haven't done anything with this install but set it up. (No internet access to download anything new on it *pouts* Cable's not installed and, of course, I have a PCMCIA Winmodem.)

I keep reading that this card is supported in Kernel 2.2.13.

So is there somewhere I might have missed "turning it on?"

Have you tried looking up your laptop at http://www.linux-laptop.net/ as they should have it listed and what's supported.

Well. I feel like an idiot.

I logged into mandrakeguru or mandrake expert or whatever and I was replied to with four simple words

"Can You Run Sndconfig?"

DUH! It took a few attempts, but it worked. Yayyy!

/me now looks at PCMCIA modem and DVD drive...who's next?

Thanks for your suggestions, guys.

I guess I always assume those with questions have already done the research on their distros website before posting here.

Glad to hear you got it working. Enjoy.

Yeah. Like I said. I guess I jumped the gun and started looking for all kinds of "workarounds" before seeing if there was an "easy" method.

On the upside, I got my PCMCIA modem working in under two minutes. Thank go for LinkSys and their non "win"modem.
