Purchased a new IDE harddisk. removed existing IDE master to free the channel for the new hd. attached the drive. dmseg shown it's hdc, able to detect the drive. But when I tried cfdisk /dev/hdc or fdisk /dev/hdc. It says drive not present.

Any thought ?

PS: Redhat 7.1,40G ATA drive

Is it detected properly in the bios?

Yes. It's detected by BIOS.
Previously, the secondary master is for my ide cdrom. I remove the cd-rom drive and attached my new hd to secondary master.
dunno what's the problem.....

Put it on your Primary channel strapped as a slave to your existing drive. Then fdisk it. After that you can move it to whereever you want. Don't know why but fdisk has a hard time with the secondary channel.

Thanks for your suggestion. I will try to see if I can get my harddisk on track. :D
