I'm running debian woody and I can't get my X server running. When I type X to start it I get a no screens found error. what does that mean. I have Gnome and Kde installed also. When I try startkde I get $Display not set. Hox do i fix this?

Your /etc/X11/XF86Config file is messed up. You need to run whatever config tool it is that Debian uses to configure the Xserver. Some distros have their own tools to setup X like XFDrake for Mandrake or setup for RedHat. You could just try xf86config but thats a rather user-un-friendly tool.

I did run the config tool. But that didn't help. Do I have to tell X to start a WM. I have a .xinitrc file in my home. Is there any thing else that I need to have?
