Hey guys,
I really gotta tell you linux is on pain in the... anyway I am looking for a little insight on a problem I am having with getting everything set up on my linux box. I have a junk Packard Bell 406cd (I know that says it all) but it is a Pentium 75, one 800mb hd and one 700mb hd, a 3c509 ehternet and a linksys LNE100tx ethernet.
What I am attemting to do is (after multiple installs of Red Hat 7.0) get these two cards working together as a gateway/router/firewall...but everytime I try to load the modules for the cards it gives me crazy errors. I have read the NHF and the posting but I think they are missing one step...what if it doesn't work. Also I am getting a unrelated error saying that the hd's are not ready for the information... any help would be very much appreciated

Use OpenBSD. Download and make the bootdisk, ftp install, install the default packages and comp28.tgz, configure the two network cards, reboot, ftp to ftp.openbsd.org and grab an editor (vi is included by default if you know how to use it.), edit the appropriate files (the FAQ explains all of this in great detail), voila! instant gateway, router, firewall

Or try Coyote Linux (http://www.coyotelinux.com). Firewall/router/ and more on a single floppy. Plus the ability to be built from both Linux or Winders.

do you guys think it is the operating system that is the problem?
I may have it down to installing the modules... the 3c509 works fine but the tulip gives me an error :

device or resource busy....
which I assume is that it cannot detect the irq of the card but it is a pnp pci card... ?
Thanks in advance.

Before you try OpenBSD (unless you're really adventurous), try Mandrake 7.2. You didn't say how much RAM you have but Mandy can install with a non-graphical interface with as little as 32 Mb (maybe less, I've never tried less than 32 Mb). Mandy comes with lots of utilities that make network setup easier. It's waaaay better (am I biased?) than Redhat.

Since you don't have much HD space on any one drive, install Mandy as a Web server. That should give you the packages you need for IP masquerading. Then download Easychains 1.5 from www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com) to enable a medium weight firewall and IP masquerader.

Good luck and stick with it. You'll be waaay happy you did! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
