I have a friend who would like to run Linux for his first time. I myself have only run it for about 5 weeks or so. The way my system is set up, I have Win98 and Mandrake 7.2 on a 10 gig hdd, using GRUB as the OS chooser or bootloader. The way I did it was simply installing Windows 98 like normal, then Mandrake has all the partitioning tools needed to give Win 5 gigs, and itself 5 gigs, then I further divided Mandrakes partition for boot, root, swap, etc. Judging from a post a few mins ago involving doing the same with Win2k, I am wondering why they should install Mandrake first THEN Windows, then configure lilo. The way I did it was very painless, and I myslef like GRUB over lilo. Does Win ME require any other setup then the way I did it? Or is Win2k, ME boot loader in some way more advanced?

Thanks for the advise

The way I heard is WINDOWS first, and then linux because Linux will see windows, but windows won't see linux. I installed Linux on top of windows painlessly (well, not PAINLESSLY, but successfully). It doesn't matter.... All I ever use windows for anyway is to play roms on emulators (if I could get Xmess to work at a practical level with my Joystick, I wouldn't have any real reason to have windows right now)...

Definitely install Windows first or it will come back and bite ya in your ***. Trust Me. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

You do it the following ways, depending on the OS... I'm not sure about ME, but if it has it's own bootloader and has done away with autoexec.bat and config.sys, just follow the same steps as win2k. I find it unlikely that ME has a diff bootloader tho.

Case 1: {Windows 9x} Install Windows first. Like was said before, reason being, Windows 9x doesn't have the ability to boot another partition other than it's own.

Case 2: {Windows NT/2k} Is slightly different. And you have to install after OR don't have lilo on the MBR (hell I wouldn't bother with it at all if I was on an NT varient). Reason for this is: NT needs to use it's own boot loader, which HAS to be in the MBR or it won't boot. AT ALL. Only answer is to configure the Windows NT bootloader to include your Linux partition.

Hope that helps.
