Hello,

I am a Linux Newbie. I installed Mandrake 7.2 and I could only get the printer to work. It did manage to detect that my US Robotics card was from US Robotics, but my particular model, the Performance Pro, was not listed in their hardware list.

My MS Intellimouse wheel does not work. I don't know it if is supposed to or not, but the basic mouse cursor does work.

My soundcard doesn't work either. Is there a simple method for installing all of these hardwares? There HAS to be a way.

I have seen people giving others advice like "Make sure the register command says, "-a /hda/*" or something to that effect.

I have no idea what these command lines are, where they are, or what to they should say.

Help.

Steven

Steven,

1. Modem. I'm not positive, but doesn't Mandrake ship with a 2.2.x kernel? If so, you'll need to upgrade your kernel to 2.3 or greater. Mine worked great once I upgraded to 2.4.1 (in RedHat)! To compile and install a kernel: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/index.html

<edit> Ooops. Almost forgot. To check which kernel version you are running, at a command prompt type "uname -r" (without the quotation marks). The output should be something like 2.4.1 (my kernel).</edit>

2. Mouse. The mouse will only work as a basic mouse until you modify some configuration files. Look here: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/intellimouseexplorer.html

3. Soundcard. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/soundcards/index.html

Hope these get you pointed in the right direction.

As far as there being a "simple method of installing all of these hardwares?" Probably not. But you are right "There HAS to be a way." There is. Just take your time, you'll get there.

No god here. Just ran across the stuff before you did. I'm sure that in the future you will be able to do the same for someone else. :D

Just FYI, you should always setup one thing at a time before worrying about the next. You stay organised and it just feels better. Trust me.
