when i boot up i get a failure for eth0. what exactly is this and how do I fix it?
will it stop my internet connection working properly? i'm using red hat 6.2 and an isa modem detected and installed in llinux (no special drivers etc.

eth0 is an ethernet device. If your internet connection is already working then you can probably just leave it as is. If the failed message is bothering you try using linuxconf to disable eth0.
