Okay... Computer upgrade time..
The motherboard I'm looking at is the ASUS A7V133...
What does anyone know about the built in soundcard on that, and how well it works with linux, or how easy it is to disable, when I get a real soundcard?
:D
A 1Ghz machine is going to be nice.. Lemme tell ya...

Most add-on sound cards disable the on-board sound upon installation. There are other MB's you can purchase that don't come with integrated sound - perhaps opt for one of those? :)

The sound option on the a7v133 is optional -- meaning not all asus a7v133 mobo's haev onboard sound, buy one without the onboard sound unless you really want onboard sound, I can't think of many reasons to want it (well, there are a couple, I thought about buying a board with onboard everything to put into a VERY small case (hey, if you don't need to use an expansion slots, you could make the thing tiny!)

90% of those on-board soundcards I've seen have are Soundblaster compatible, so you should be able to get it to work, even if it's only in old 8-bit Soundblaster mode.
There will be an option in the BIOS to disable the on-board sound if you decide to add a seperate sound board.

Yeah, I figured you could BIOS disable it..
You can with my current computer too..
Even though the stinking thing doesn't really get disabled..
That's another rant though...

I have on board sound chip CS4237 and I got it working under Red Hat 6.2 with Windows sound support. It doesn't work under Debian though.... :( and I don't have time to tinker with it yet. ;) If work under one distro, you should work under the other distro just a matter of finding out which module to load.
