Well, this is my first time, so be easy with me. First, What a great site this is. Second is that I've installed mandrake 8.0 on my dual boot pc (win98se/win2000). Mandrake found everything, including sound, but detects my logitech ps-2 mouse as a serial mouse. When I try and change it to a ps-2, it seems to accept it, and when I reboot, it stays at serial mouse. I've also tried turbolinux, and caldera 2.4. They detect my mouse properly, but no sound. From my initial impressions, I like the mandrake, and would like to use it to learn on, but this mouse thing is driving me nuts!

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. Remember, this is my first time with Linux, and it's taking time to learn.

Thanks again.

I hate to ask this but does the mouse work even though it is detected as the wrong type?

I will also ask another stupid question, when you installed Mdrake did you specify the mouse as a Logitech PS/2? I am pretty sure that logitech mice are normally quite readily configurable in linux.

Mike,

The mouse does not work after mandrake reboots. During the setup process, it is detected as a generic ps-2, or I have selected it as a logitech ps-2. I have also tried to make it be other ps-2 mice during setup, and it ususally works all during setup, but when the setup process is over, mandrake "sees" the mouse as a two button serial.

I'll keep trying to fool with it to get it to work.

run xf86config and make sure you choose PS2 mouse and also specify /dev/psaux instead of /dev/mouse as device.

Well, I've tried all the things mentioned here, as well as more, and am still at no go. After I made the changes to the xf86config file, and saved it, when I rebooted the pc, the graphics login failed, and it went to the console mode. It seems as if I can't boot into the graphics mode anymore. I reinstalled from scratch after formatting the partition, and still nothing.

I'm starting to think it's my motherboard, or some hardware thing. I've got an ASUS P5-AB mb, two maxtor hard drives, with Linux on the slave, after win2000.

Any more guesses? I do appreciate all the responses so far.

This is probably a dumb question but: Which port is your mouse plugged in to? The serial or the ps2 port? You may have an adapter on it.

John,

It's not a dumb question... in the past, I'd done similar things, and spent literally hours trying to figure out what was wrong. No, the mouse is a true ps-2 mouse, and is in my ps-2 port.

Thanks though. I've checked everything four or five times. I've got an old serial mouse that I may hook up, and re-install linux again!
