I hate to ask this, but the other solutions don't seem to work.
I can't seem to mount my cdrom as non root.
Im fresh off an install off mandrake 7.2, went into linuxconf, and set it to user enabled, all that styuff.
this is my fstab entry for it:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,exec,dev,suid,ro,noauto 0 0
looks ok to me, but still gives me the only root may moutn this.
any suggestions?

no way 'round that, sorry...
su to root, mount the device, then exit to your user account and then browse the cd.

You didn't say what command you were using.
Your fstab looks OK.
Most distros will let the user mount a cdrom device with a simple...
mount /mnt/cdrom (/mnt/cdrom = mount point in fstab)
Only root can use the verbose command.

so I can mount data cd's the short way (you learn soemtyhing new all the times) I was using the verbose mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
but I still am unable to mount music cd's.
When I tried mounting said:
"mount: wrong fs type, bad operation, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom etc..."
so I changed it from iso9660 to auto.
and it gave me this:
"mount: I col not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified"
any suggestions on what to do to mount audio cdroms?

I didn't know it was possible to mount an audio cd... Lord knows I've tried, but if it's possible, it escapes me. I think it's because audio cds are filled with 'raw' data, and don't even have a filesystem on them. When you mount a disc or partition, you aren't actually mounting the device; you're mounting the filesystem on the device or partition. And since audio cds have no filesystem, I think there's nothing to mount at all... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif
