Specifically, when I installed the nVidia
rpm's from console (not an Xterm) at the end there was a message that certain Mesa files were conflicting and had been renamed.
Is there any way of getting Mesa and the nVidia drivers to play nice with each other?

Are you using Red Hat 7.1? Pls. indicate your distribution. By the way, it's a lot better installing from tarballs. Avoid rpms as much as possible. go to www.evil3d.net (http://www.evil3d.net) for more information under their articles or reviews section.

As a matter of fact, I am using Red Hat 7.1. Sorry for forgetting to mention that. I will definintely checkout that website. Most of the 3D graphics review sites pay scant attention to Linux; well, at least the ones that I've seen.
Thanks.

That's normal for the nvidia installer to rename some files. What exactly is your problem? Is opengl not working for you? Or maybe you wanted to be able to jump between software and hardware rendering for some reason?

The specific drivers for nVidia are on their website. You'll have to follow the instruction to install it (I think you have to use the flags --force and --nodeps with rpm). But beware of the bug ! (I don't know if it is so for RH, but with SuSE, text mode is unavailable with a nVidia proprietary driver). And, by the way, these drivers are not available as tarballs.
