hi there... i'm looking for a friend. he needs a 56k modem that will work with linux. i'd prefer internal, but external works too.
what are some cheap ones that will work with linux, without special things like the linmodems...

Hi
Check this link: http://www.bestdata.com/products.htm
Click on the modem link then the Linux modem link.
I bought a 56SF the other day and i am going to be putting into a Debain box here in a little. I purchased it becuase it claimed to be linux compatible. It has jumpers for the com port and irq and it is controller based so you don't have to pull a linmodem type of deal from what i understand. I will find out soon enough though.
Most ISA are hardware modems. If it has jumpers or (rare) dip switches then it is Hardware. Most X2/v.90 or Kflex/v.90 are hardware modems. A few PCI hardware modems exist. I do believe all external that connect through a serial port are hardware. For usb check out www.linux-usb.org (http://www.linux-usb.org) for which ones that work with the usb kernel drivers. Of cousre for USB you would either need a backport for 2.2.x or a 2.4-test good luck.

so if i go to best buy (where i buy most of my stuff, because of a lack of a credit card) and asked for an isa modem, more than likely, it would work?

i know they cost more and plugging in the external pwr supply can be a pain
but i prefer external because there is no guessing if it will work on either linux or windoze and no messing with plug n pray or jumpers
if i have to use an analog modem, i use external

I'm using a Creative Labs Modem Blaster Flash 56 II ISA Controller Based modem, Model # DI5601 (internal modem). Most ISA modems work. What you want is a "hardware modem". You do not want a modem that is SOFTWARE controlled.
This long list shows which modems are winmodems, modems that work with linux and modems that have not been tested(not sure if they work with linux). (http://www.o2.net/%7Egromitkc/20001108a.html)

Creative Labs Modem Blaster. It's an ISA card but I think that they make an PCI card that is hardware based. I think I paid $50.00 for it Which is not exactly cheap but I never had any problems with it.

I use a Jaton Communicator II - 56k, ISA, jumpers, etc. and it works great in Linux. Cheap too - $40 or so at Best Buy.
And, if you pay at teh hardware counter, enjoy the look on the sales guy's face when he asks if you want them to install it, and you reply by asking "Naw, I just need to symlink /dev/ttyS1 to /dev/modem".

ph34r, that actually sounds like fun... over at best buy they don't know a whole lot (i'm just talking about mine... not in general.. i like best buy) i had my mom go get me a ethernet card, so she asked me to be more specific, and i was being mean and said, "One that supports CAT5 cable"... so she went down there. I had told her the one i wanted most.. 3c509b... they told her that the 3c509b did not support CAT5 cable, so she would have to buy a different card, an OfficeConnect or something that cost $80...
what fun.. they're smart

I ran into a guy here who has no idea about NIC's and he had 3 3C905-TX's and 1 3C905B.
He sold me the lot for $5...
It turns out that's the exact # I need.

No, there are actually external winmodems (I believe US Robotics made some).
