OK, I have decided to install Debian, but I don't want to download a ISO image because I don't have a CD burner. I have heard of something called NLS? Is this where I just download a bootup disk and then go from there or what. I have looked at the Debian download page but can only seem to find ISO images. Where is a simple how to on this, or can someone out there help me?
Cheers

Just ask and someone on here will probably send you a copy of Debian. Two people have sent me copies. I would send you one if I had blank cd's.

I'm certain you are referring to NFS, which is a type of network install. You have a local drive with either the CD or HDD with the appropriate files and install the base system over the local network using this method. You can also install via FTP, a similar way, but you use FTP to get into one of the Debian mirrors. Obviously this is limited to your connection speed.

If you have the bandwidth to grab an ISO, by all means do so; you can get one from www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) or "create one" from cdimage.debian.org (http://cdimage.debian.org). My method for installing is described in this post (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=019835) from a few days ago. Saves some time and bandwidth IMHO, and Debian's great because once you reboot from the initial install, you can grab only the software you want using dselect or apt-get and not have to have an entire ISO full of stuff you won't use anyway.

If you do want to try installing over FTP, take a look at Debian's site (http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-install-methods.en.html) and see if it makes sense to you...if not post back and we'll try to get you going in the right direction.

Bandwidth is no problem, I would like to install using FTP, but don't understand the How-to's. I don't have a CD burner which is the big stopper. If I did I would have just downloaded the ISO without even thinking.
Thanks for the help

OK, I really could use some help. I have looked at the debian website and although it says you can install via FTP or HTTP it doesn't say how, and I am not interested in downloaded about 15 floppie images and burning those. Has anyone done this or am I forging into unknown territory. Because I am lost.

According to the FTP Installation (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/installation/ftpinstall.html) NHF, you should be able to download and create a network bootdisk. From there I guess it's just a matter of booting from the disk and doing a ftp install.

Depends on which flavor of debian you want.
Potato, Woody, Sid?

And also, do you have space on another partition you can use to install from?

I'll be glad to give you detailed instructions when you answer these questions.

for Potato goto http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r3/main/disks-i386/2.2.23-2001- 04-15/images-1.44/ (http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r3/main/disks-i386/2.2.23-2001-04-15/images-1.44/) and download root.bin, rescue.bin and all the driver*.bin I'm not sure if you need the base*.bin files, with Woody you don't.

After you downloaded all the bin files goto http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r3/main/disks-i386/2.2.23-2001-04- 15/dosutils/ (http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r3/main/disks-i386/2.2.23-2001-04-15/dosutils/) and download rawrite2.exe

download them all to the same directory(folder) then goto the dos prompt and type rawrite2 then enter the bin name then instert a floppy disk. do that for all the bin images and then boot to the resuce cd. when it asks you what media you want to use to install chose ftp/http/network its one of those I think.
