Probably your two best sources of learning linux are reading posts and NHF's here, and by picking up a copy of Running Linux, 3rd Ed.
This is an EXCELLENT book, going over a ton of the stuff you need to know to use a linux system well, and in human language (it's only real drawback is it doesn't talk much about different window managers - all it goes into is KDE). I have tape-flag bookmarks for setting permissions, startup files, working with processes, Lilo, user accounts, mkfs and fsck, taring & gziping, printing, vi, emacs, and a ton of other stuff.
Buy it :D
