I have been running Mandrake as my main Linux for over a year. 7.1 has been fine (UDMA recognition, USB printer support - all is fine).
Last weekend I tried installing 7.2, from a pair of Cheapbytes CD-RW's and a pair I burned myself at work. However, it won't go the distance - I get to the point of installing packages, but it always fails at some point after that (Glibc errors, or other random dependancy install errors). I'm not trying an update, but a full Custom install, with partition formatting (I'll restore stuff from backups later).
At first I thought bad CD's (even though I've never had a bad Cheapbytes CD), hence I burned my own (never had a bad burn from the machine I used at work, either). 7.1 went back on fine, so I can always just stick with that, but I don't get the 7.2 install failures?
My machine is a Gateway PIII 450 (224Mb RAM, nVidia TNT 16Mb video card), Promise UDMA drive with a WDC 9Gb drive and a Maxtor 10Gb drive. I can't believe it's a hardware issue since a)7.1 installs and runs fine, and b) there are no disk errors or problems. I guess I could have two sets of bad CD's, but that's never happened before and just seems really bizarre if so?
Any insights from 'Drake 7.2 successful installers?

Thought I was the only one not getting 7.2 to install. I don't even get to the installer and it hangs up. When it gets to hdd device when starting that is where it justs sits and goes now further.

I've been trying to install Mandrake7.2 on a Dell Dimension 4100 for over a week. I also figured it was a bad CD burn and reburned with no results. When booting directly from CD in either my CDRW or DVDROM drives, the text-based installer would get as far as "Initializing CDROM..." and then just stop. I tried again from a boot floppy and failed again with the CD in the DVDROM drive, but actually got the graphical installer up with the CDRW drive. It hung while partitioning the HD.
I cannot figure this out for the life of me. I'm thinking a problem with the included IDE controller on the motherboard. I can't imagine this distro doesn't work with the Intel 815 chipset, as I haven't seen any documentation of that on Mandrake's site. If anyone figures this thing out, I'd love to hear what's up.
Thanks for any help.

I installed 7.2 with no problems at all. I did one clean install on a new machine and an up date on a machine running 7.1. Everything went through without a hitch but I was using the commercial 7.2 deluxe version. Slashdot was running a warning last week about early versions of 7.2 and boxed sets from Walmart that were not stable releases becaused they had been rushed to market to meet shipping dates imposed by walmart. All of my drives are from Quantum and I have never had a problem using linux with them. I have heard that 7.2 has a real problem with Western Digital drives. One Linux mag that I was reading advised against using them until western comes up with a patched driver for their drive. I don't know whether the problem is with the kernel or just the installer.

Thanks georgesr, I had not heard anything about 7.2 and WDC drives specifically. I'll take the WDC out and see if it goes on the Maxtor by itself. Weird though if that's the fault, Drake 6.5, 7 and 7.1 had no problems with my WDC - what the heck did they muck with?

Well, I don't get it. I took the WDC out and still had the same problem, whether on my Promise card or the MoBo controller.
If anyone figures this out I'd be interested, but I'm going back to 7.1, it's fine and stable and I don't have time (or disk space) to futz with 7.2 any longer. I just don't get how it can get all the way to installing packages, and then fail (and along with my two sets of CD's, I've also tried a friends commercial ones, only bought last week).
