Can anybody recommend a good CD burner for RH 7.1 running on an intel box? I'm planning on buying one soon, but I have no idea what to get.

Thanks

It depends on how much you want to spend.

Checkout this thread in the General forum (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=026781) as it should help. The same sorta question.

I would be willing to spend up to $200 or so, but I don't know if I should be looking for an IDE model or a SCSI model. I know that Xcdroast wants a SCSI simulator (or something like that) when you have an IDE burner installed, but I'm not really sure if that's a big pain or not.

append=" hdc=ide-scsi" to your lilo.conf and rerun lilo. Quite easy. BTW, if this for Linux only, buy an OEM drive as you won't need any software.

This is starting to help, but I now have one more question: what's an oem drive?

Thanks

These instructions only got me halfway. I found more complete instructions here: http://www.linuxfocus.org/common/src/article227/README.atapi.html

These instructions are for RedHat 7.0 and Mandrake 7.2, but they also worked for me on
RedHat 7.1.

OEM - original equipment manufacturer

Basically, just the hardware, usually in shrink-wrap, often bought from computer fairs, usually containing very little or no software and often cheaper than the "Retail Package".
