OK, here's my problem. I'm a rank newbie with Linux and I'm trying to learn it. I am dual booting WinME and Mandrake 7.1. I've got grub for a bootloader, and KDE is my default desktop.

Here's my system specs:

Athlon 550/Epox 7KXA (slot A) motherboard with onboard AC97 PCI audio. Neither Windows 98 nor ME had any trouble recognizing and enabling the sound, and BeOS sees it too. No so with Linux (at least not so far).

Blah blah blah HD, FDD, CD-ROM, KB, Mouse, PCI NIC, TV card, blah blah blah

128 MB PC-133 SDRAM.

A Boca Tidalwave USB hardware corrected modem.

I do not know how to enable the sound or the modem. All I know is the sys under Linux doesn't see them. It's like they are not there. FYI, I used the auto install for a workstation when I installed the OS, and it auto-config'd my video just fine, which is more than Win or BeOS could do.

Basically, I don't know what to do. I'm a newbie. I tried RFM, and I don't get the FM, OK? Maybe that's why it's called the FM instead of just the M, ya think? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks for any help.

Probably your biggest problem is your kernel version. Many updates have come out since the default kernel that shipped with Drake 7.1. The kernel updates contain more hardware support especially the 2.4.

I would update to the 2.4 and that should solve most of your issues with the USB Modem and onboard sound.

You can get the kernel at: www.kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org)

try pressing ctrl+alt+F1 to get to a true command prompt.

Log in and run sndconfig
This solved my problems with my card
