do you know the integrity of the mobo and ram?
wild guess(if this is a "new" system) -> either bad ram or bad mobo, but i could be wrong!!
did you try to load DOS to see if it freaks out?
maybe somebody else can give better/more concrete suggestions? :o

I'm using a 486 DX2 for process contol running slack 4.0
You should provide more details as far as system configuration, distribution, method of install, etc.
Don't try mandrake....won't run on a 486.

But doesnt it depend more on the Kernel version than the Distro???
I have like 4 different distros to work with
Redhat 7, PHAT, Slackware (Newest Version), and Drake.
Install method... CD, CD, CD, CD. two ISA NICs (NE2000 compat) one ISA vid card.. (VGA, and only for the duration of the install). Installing to a small 2.5 size HDD (1.2 gig) basic 3.5 floppy drive for boot disk. 16mb ram (4, 4mb 72 pin sim, dual parrody (or somthen like that... im not used to RAM problems)
Dont recall the specifics of the MB, but the jumpers ARE set rite for the proc and clock.... but im not sure about the rest, was kinda excited to get all the parts together and just "Jumped in" (onme of the funnest ways to learn)

Mandrake, and mabye redhat 7 also, I haven't checked, optimize their packages for i586, meaning pentium or better, so trying on a 486 could cause problems. Of the four you listed, slack has the best shot at working. btw, you should be able to get x on that without much trouble, just don't try to use kde or gnome. Go with a low res and color, and something like blackbox, icewm, windowmaker, xfce, etc.

I figured you probably wouldn't need to, I just get annoyed at all the posts I see where someone tells somebody else that x probably won't well run on a perfectly good machine.
