I've recently built a computer around a PC-CHIPS Mainboard (Funds restricted buying a better board).
It has onboard Graphics,Sound & Lan and comes with an AMR modem.
I've finally managed to get the graphics going (So I can use X)
but the other 3 are still defying me.
Mostly I need the modem (HSP56 MR) & sound (SiS 7018).
Could anyone please offer some advice (other than throw the board away and get a new one...although it is tempting..)

Sorry not much advice anyone can give you but that or buy another modem I promise you any onboard modem on a pc**** mb will be a winmodem and inoperable in linux. sound may be a posibility you'll just have to find out what chip it uses.

the chip used for the sound card will have the name and model of the sound card written on it
or the software for the card will say what it is (for windows for sure, so to see it you will need access to a win box).
or the manual will say it for sure.
or as a last resort post the name and model of the board and someone will figure it out for you..like me :)
i just realized what a wrote was not an answer oops very late here :(

The sound is a funny one.
Linux detected it as a SiS chipset sound device.
(Which it is, its a "SiS 7018 Audio Driver" according to windows)
But still no sound...I have a dual boot system and sounds fine in windows.
In Linux's defence Windows couldn't detect the card itself, the MBoard install set it up.
Is it possible the soundcard has configured correctly but I somehow have sound disabled?

Sadly, the only advice I would give is to get rid of that wretched PC-Chips board and get a decent one.
I went through two of these horrible things before I bit the bullet and bought a proper (read: Abit BE6-II) board, which has given me sterling service for 18 months and over 3 processor upgrades.
Cheap mainboards are, IMHO, a false economy.

Okay, the computer cost me just over £200 to put together. I'm not exactly well off and I can't really afford to replace the MBoard.
When I have the funds I'll probably build myself a good Athlon based machine but for the time being the computer performs fine. And I don't really need anything more powerfull (AMD D750, 128MB RAM).
It does everything I need (albeit within Microshaft enviroment).
When I first installed Linux I used an old version of Red Hat and I had bugger all hardware compatibility. I decided that perhaps people who said linux is good as a server and thats it were right.
Earlier this week I installed Mandrake 7.2, (allowing a bit more of a fair comparison with current versions of Windoze) and I think its fantastic. It installed a treat, it's lightning quick and it has pretty much everything I need bundled with the distribution.
I was so impressed Windows ME's survival on my dual boot hard disk is in serious jeopardy.....if I can get Linux running properly (ie sound & modem) Windoze goes.

Perhaps a newer version of Mandrake (8.0) may help to detect the soundcard. You could try their hardware compatability list to see what is supported.
Does PCchips have any info on their site about Linux and compatability issues?
You could also try searching at Google (http://www.google.com/linux) for the SiS chipset to find info on how to configure it.
Have you checked out www.pcchips.nl (http://www.pcchips.nl) it may have info or drivers that need for you MB.

The sound is suppose to be AC '97 compatible. Try setting it up for that. www.linmodems.org (http://www.linmodems.org) is your best bet for the Modem, but I give it the proverbial snowball's chance...
Doing a bit of a search reveals that ALSA might have drivers.

In checking with SIS I found this page: http://www.sis.com.tw/support/download/linux.htm
From reading that, I would suggest MDK 8.0, particularly DrakFreq (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/mandrakefreq.php3).
