Thanks for any suggestions...

My RH 7 setup works well with ethernet and cable modem for net access. When I try to access another ISP via PPP and old USR modem, I get to the login screen and after name and password entering, I get immediately cut off.

This happens even if I use minicom (which I installed just to test things out). The log file looks like the ISP machine asks for password twice, and after the second time it kicks me off. My Windoze setup allows me both dialup and ethernet access, so I know the passwords are correct. I have an old Mac and use the same pw for that too.

Can my init strings be off? They were autodetected on setup before first using (USR Courier V.Everything). To use both modems, do I have to change any config files... network config or whatever? I sure can't find anything online to help--- or in the books I have at home.

I'm hoping somebody can help... the last time I asked a question (3-27 in Software forum), I guess I stumped everyone. What a learning curve this OS has!

Make sure your authentication protocol is the same as your ISP. Some ISPs use PAP but some use CHAP.

I've also read something about a timeout option in one of the ppp scripts. I never use modems with Linux, so I'm not sure where it would be. You should be able to find something in the ppp documentation.
