This is my situation.
I'm using RH 7.0. and have a maxtor 40 gb hd.

When I boot up linux, my hard drive light on my computer case stays on no stop. Even if i log in and do anything it just stays on. When I log in as root.. and start x-windows(startx) it goes off and works normally(only blinks when i do some disk io). then if i log off as root and log in as any user it still works normally.

also if i boot into windows it works like it should.

any ideas how to fix this?? am i going to burn out my HD if the light just stays on all the time... dunno what to do.. please help...

thanks..

You'll burn out the light.

Can you hear any disk i/o activity when the light stays on? If not, then I wouldn't worry about it. If you can, then a little more investigation would be necessary.

Anyone else?

Do you have another IDE device connected, but don't have the power connected? Or, can you hear your CD-ROM spinning. The HDD light indicates any and all IDE activity, including in some rare instances, a device connected but not powered.
