Hi all!

I'm upgrading my Mandrake machine and wanted to know whether the Promise or Adaptec RAID cards are fully supported in Linux, and if there were any issues I should know about beforehand.

I prefer the look of the Promise card (cheaper), and because it has four slots for hard drives. I'm really looking at installing four 41GB IBM hard drives--is there any reason this wouldn't work and will Mandrake detect this set up at install time??

The configuration will be:

AMD Athlon 1.4GHz DDR
1024MB DDR RAM
32MB Geforce2MX AGP graphics
Promise RAID Controller (PCI)
x4 IBM 41GB Hard Drives

Mandrake 8.0/8.1

Thanks for any help/advice. The machine will be running as a file/print server, intranet/web server, firewall and Proxy for around 250 clients running light services.

Thanks again!

Paul, UK

I know my computer works with linux. I think you should just give that "untested" computer to me :-P

If you already have the hardware and software, just give it a try.

Good luck

When I was using a promise card I had to use boot parameters (ide0=foo, ide1=foo) until I got a kernel patch to support the card.

W/O the boot params or the kernel patch, I'd get an error message and it wouldn't boot.

Kernel 2.4.10 has drivers that work with my fasttrak66 (formerly an ultra66 but with the help of a resistor it's now raid :D ) Works good in raid0 mode for me, don't know about raid1.
