Ok serious newbie here. Installed Redhat 5.4 a couple of years ago, but never got too into it.
My question is this. Mandrake gives you an option to install linux INSIDE Windows. Is this recomended since I'll be needing info from the web and have no idea how to set that up. Just as a start to the whole linux thing, then would move to a purer install after.
Which way would be best for me?

You mean like WinLinux installs "inside" Windows?
I don't remember the specifics, but if you do that, it'll run off an emulated ext2 filesystem, instead of a real one. That leads to a major speed decrease.
You'd be better of partitioning your hard drive and installing to the new partition.
Your post makes it sound like you don't know you can dual boot Linux and Windows... have them both on the same computer, and boot one, and reboot to the other.

No I know you can have them both on the same computer, and dual boot. And I know how to do that using Fdisk, or Partition Magic from my earlier experience with RedHat.
Since I've not yet installed Mandrake, I don't really kno what they are talking about, but it says there is a way to install it 'inside' windows so you don't have to reboot.
Mostly, I was wondering if this would be a good, easy way to familiarize myself with the system, before going to the dual boot method. I'd like to have functioning Internet available WHILE I'm learning, so I can get more adjusted to the OS.

you will still need to "reboot" with the winlinux thingee, but you don't have to make a new partition for it. it installs on the fat32 partition, and just grabs enough space for it.

So no advantage at all then, other than no partition? Sorry, I really am new to this. :(

I've personally never used WinLinux, but besides the speed drops, I've also heard it's prone to crashing and locking up. If I were you, I'd use Partition Magic (you say you have it) and free up like 2-3 gigs, make sure you set it as unpartitioned space, dont try making the Linux partitions through PM unless you REALLY KNOW what you're doing (LM install will set them up automatically for you).
Then use the LM8 disc to boot into the install and install Mandy, simple as that.

I must agree with Dissolutus on that one. Mandrake is easy to use to partition the drive. Make sure you back it up first! I personally found a smaller drive to play with linux first.

Denmon, just click on Internet in KDE. LM will also setup the internet connetion during install.

Thanks, got it up and running, and the internet works fine. :) Anywhere good to go for REAL newbie questions like unzipping, and basic stuff like that? Or am I in the right place?
Search the NHF's (Newbiezed Help Files) Theres heaps there, or search the BBS, and if all else fails post a question. I have found google to be great as well.
