OK, I went to a computer show this past w/e and got a 128 MB PC133 DIMM, a Western Digital 7200 rpm 20 GB HD, and a K6II 500 mhz processor. This stuff went in a dual boot Mandrake 7.1/Win98 box that had a K6II 350 w/ two 64 MB DIMMs and an 8 GB HD. So, I doubled my memory and bumped my processor up a bit.

I have a couple of questions. I installed the memory first. While booting up, the bios gave me a memory error and corrected itself to include the new memory. No problems. I shut it down again and replaced the processor with the new one. However, when a booted it up again, it still thinks it has a K6II-350 .

My first question for all the experts out there is, Is this a jumper problem or a bios problem? I guessing that I need to reset some jumpers on the motherboard for the 500 mhz cpu.

I haven't installed the new HD yet. The only empty slot I have is 5.25", so I've got to come up with a chasis for the new HD or just duct tape it in :). The 8 GB drive that's in there now is partitioned with 4 GB FAT32, 128 MB Linux swap, 2.5 GB /usr, 500 MB /home, a little in /boot, and I don't remember where the rest is . I'm plan to install Mandrake 8.0 on the new HD and reformat the Linux partitions on the 8 GB drive back to FAT32. The problem is, I have stuff on the current Linux partitions that I don't want to lose. What's the best way to approach this? Can I rename the partitions on the 8GB drive without loosing data? Or, do I just put the new drive in, install Mandrake 8, then mount the partitions on the old drive and copy the stuff over, and then reformat the partitions on the old drive to FAT32?

TIA,

BamaRob

probably
few if any socket 7 mobo's have "soft bios", ie automatic cpu detection
can you post what mobo it is?

you probably need to read the manual to see what speed cpu it supports and how to change it

get a set of drive rails for convert 3.5" for a 5.25" bay, duct tape is  but you can get the rails for only a few bucks, like these
http://www.computergate.com/products/mkh.gif
only $1.99 from computer gate (http://www.computergate.com/cgi-bin/prodinfo?sn=6898100374918&cd=MKH)
course shipping would be nasty unless you bought some more stuff
if there are any local shops there, you should be able to find them for ~$5, hopefully

Yes, that is exactly what I would do. Just be sure when installing Mandrake that it does not touch your existing Linux partitions.
