I am a complete newbie to Linux. I just installed Mandrake 8.0, and my modem isn't recognized.

How can you get Linux to recognize to detect new hardware? I have a AOpen FM-56PM 56k PCI modem. Windows tells me that it is on COM 2 on my computer.

Thanks!

Ben

you might wanna check out www.linmodems.org (http://www.linmodems.org)
even if it's a hardware modem, any variation from standard settings will require a teensy bit of work.

Try turning Plug-N-Play off in your BIOS. Then, click on the Internet Icon in KDE. (Assuming you're using KDE in Mandrake 8.0. Configure your modem through KPPP. All should work okay. Either that, or try and configure your modem in the Mandrake Control Center.

I had a problem with Linux detecting my modem off the bat too. I have an ISA modem...but the problem I ran into is that every time I restarted Linux, I had to reconfigure my modem. This seemed to only work in the Mandrake Control Center.

Hope you get it working. :)

The AOpen FM-56PM 56k PCI modem is definately a win modem.

I had a sales person try to tell me that he knew of a friend that used it in linux so I bought it. The next day I brought it back with a printout of the linmodem webpage that stated that it was a winmodem. I got the $8 more expensive (although ISA interface)AOpen FM56-ITU/2. It is a jumpered ISA hardware modem that when I set to com3 and IRQ 4 with the jumpers (should be default) works like a charm.
