OK, this may be a silly question , but I messed up. While installing Debian through VMware, I configured X, but now when I root, I get the GUI logon, and when I log on, it simply reverts badck to the logon screen. I'm assuming that I need to add which WM I want to load in an init file somewhere, so how can I access my system if I can't login to get to it, and I can't seem to be able to let lilo give me any optionw before it loads linux.

Have you tried CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a virtual console? Should work and then you can make the necessary changes.
