I am using kernal 2.2.16 with Suse 7.0.
I installed a PCI modem tonight while I'm trying to work out some other issues regarding ADSL use.
When I do command lspci -v my modem is recognized as one of the hardware items plugged into my
motherboard.
Yet, when I run the Suse setup program (YaST2), I receive a message stating that a modem device could not be found. I found an article on the net that said, "The 2.2.x series of the linux kernel does not support serial ports
on PCI devices at the time of this writing (approx.
June 2000). In other words, the 2.2.x series does not support PCI modems."

Is this correct?
My motherboard has no ISA slots, so do I have to purchase an external modem if I want to connect?
Does kernel 2.4 recognize serial ports on PCI devices, specifically modems?

Thank you for your time.

More than likely by being a PCI modem is a software modem (winmodem) and those don't play nice with linux. I would get the external since you don't have any ISA slots left.

Hi Veloct,

Thanks for your reply. This was my first post to the linuxnewbie discussion board. It ain't easy bein' a useless newbie, but with a little help I might just make it linuxland.

I have a quick follow-up question. If you were going to purchase an external 56K V.90 modem, what would you choose? Or, in the alternative, what websites would you use to research the right modem for your Linux setup?

Thank you for your time and patience.
