I always run the latest kernel. With every new version it gets better.

Until a week ago I was still running 2.2.19, 4 weeks ago even 2.2.18!
So yeah, I don't really care much for brand spanking new kernels, my 4-year-old system doesn't really profit I guess. (no USB, no 3D card, UDMA/33, you get the point...)
But, if it's any indication to you: 2.4.5 is blazing fast during boot-up!
...then my 200MHz become the "bottleneck" :(

Unfortunetly, I've been having trouble with its handspring visor support, as well as the rt8139 driver in DHCP.
Other than that, It works pretty well.

2.4 doesn't use the rtl1839 driver. The driver is now called 8139too or something like that.

Well, after looking at the documentation, I have decided to stay away from even thinking about recompiling. :(
