I'm having trouble on startig the x windows, i type and my desktop gets dark, what is happening?

Can we get a little more info? What do you type? When I don't have my system starting x automatically, I type startx. Or you can use xinit. I had a problem when I first set my system up in that it would go dark when I started xwindows. It turned out I had to massage my refresh rates and play with it a bit to get 1024x768.

I had a lot of problems with this. I don't know what distro you're using. I use Red Hat. I started with 5.2 and could not get any better than 800x600 with 16bit. Sometimes the screen would go black and others it would flicker or the whole thing would lock up. I upgraded to 6.0 and was able to get it going and I must say, it's real nice.

I would suggest going through the setup for your video and just keep trying different resolution and refresh rate settings untill you find a combanation that works for you.

What distro are you using? What video card and monitor?

My Videocard is diamond stealth 3d 4Mb, and the Monitor is the LG Studioworks 45i 14", do you know a place(site) where I can find the informations about video card? to put at the linux setup.
