I'm a new guy and I've got an intersting problem, I have a Savage4 from Creative Labs. Creative Labs just released it's "beta" drivers for the card and I tried to install them and it crashed my box.

I installed the drivers correctly (as the instructions that come with the drivers said). Checked my monitor settings and they where correct, and after I was done installing the drivrers I rebooted the computer and it would get to the point where it would load Xwindows and it would go into a loop with the screen flashing on and off (as it kept tring to restart the GUI) I have tried to get to the command prompt but when I do it keeps flashing so as far as I know I screwed it up pretty good.

There are just two things I need to know,

1. How can I prevent the GUI from loading so I can manualy edit things.

2. Any one got any suggestions on how to get my video card in?

Probably the easiest way to do it is by running Xconfigurator. But someone more experienced might be able to tell you I'm wrong.

Before he could run Xconfigurator, he needs to get to a prompt. =)
Anyway if you are using lilo at the lilo prompt type Linux 3 which boots you into console mode. From there you can edit things or like gorlon said run Xconfigurator.

I had the same problem everytime the graphical login would try to load. I got around it initially by doing a non-graphical log-in and typing startx. But they just came out with a new savage 4 driver to go with xfree86. Since I installed that even the graphical login works great.

Try CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to get out of X. If that doesn't work, then try CTRL-ALT-F1 or F2 etc. to get a console. Login as root and edit /etc/inittab to change the runlevel so as not to start Xwindows at startup. Read the NHF here on Booting into GUI for the different runlevels etc.

I also have the Savage4 (Diamond S540) and I believe it uses the SVGA server. Caldera's eDesktop 2.4 detects it during the install and I run it at 1600x1200 16bit. Works great. Xversion 3.3.6

Check the compatibility list at www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) for the version of X you are using and the suggested server to use. Perhaps you don't need the 'beta' drivers.

*is using Creative Labs S3 Savage4 card*

I am running X4.0.2, with the 'savage' driver from www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html (http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html)
1) the savage driver that ships with the x.4.0.2 binary distribution craps out when EXITING the x session, and once the driver above is installed, you MUST set the SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50 env variable if you use staroffice. (i've added it to the soffice script in [install]/soffice/

With X.3.3.6 it worked fine with the SVGA driver and there was the driverset from Creative, however when I used that I found that the server WOULD NOT work in any other mode than 1024*768 ...no matter what I did to it.
